Changing or updating email account on Jaamun

Hi

When you sign up for Jaamun service an account is created for you on Jaamun. The user name for this account is the mobile number & the password for Jaamun account is created by you at the time of signing up.

Now if you wish to change the email account that is mapped to the service or update the password or set email filters based on time or set email filters based on subject keywords and email IDs, you can simply login to your Jaamun account & make necessary changes. The account also gives you the link to pricing page from where you can renew your subscription. To check out the login page, click here.

In addition, the account page also tells you the time & date on which you received your last email via Jaamun & the number of email credits (which will appear as 'UNLIMITED' for all paid users)

Once you log-in to your Jaamun account, you can change the email account mapped to your mobile or change/update the email account password. To access this feature, click on 'Change Email Account Settings'

On your screen you will see the email ID that you had used at the time of signing up, along with the email account provider (gmail, hotmail, etc.) in the drop down list. The space for 'email password' which will be empty.

Now, what you can do here is change the email ID to any other ID of your choice. Please note that you need to enter the complete email ID in case of yahoo accounts and also select the email account provider from the drop down list (this was discussed in the previous post). Next, enter the correct email password & press 'Submit'. If the password is incorrect, a message will appear on the top of the screen, informing you about the same.

In case you wanted to change/update the email account, simply enter the new password & press 'Submit'.

Configuring IMAP or POP3 on your email account

In the previous post, I had discussed how IMAP/POP protocols are essential to Jaamun service. The obvious limitation imposed by this is that some email accounts wont be supported on Jaamun.

Gmail accounts on Jaamun
By default Gmail accounts are IMAP or POP3 enabled. To check these settings please follow our slideshare tutorial over here

Yahoo accounts on Jaamun
Yahoo IDs such as 'yahoo.co.in', 'yahoo.in', 'yahoo.co.uk' & even some 'yahoo.com' provide POP3 support. Other yahoo accounts such as 'ymail.com', 'rocketmail.com' etc may or may not provide POP3. Now, this POP service is not always pre-activated which means that if you wish to use Jaamun service or for that matter if you want to configure your email account on Microsoft Outlook, you might need to manually activate POP3. This has been discussed in our slideshare tutorial over here.

Nevertheless, the process of configuring POP is simple & is described here
1. Go to 'Options' (on the right hand side, top corner of your email account screen)
2. Select 'Mail Options'
3. On the left hand panel you will see 'POP & Forwarding'. Click on this link.
4. Click on 'Set up or Edit POP & Forwarding'. If your account does not support POP, you will see a message to this effect on your screen.
5. Check/Enable 'Web & POP Access'
6. Click on 'Save'

Hotmail or Live accounts on Jaamun
All hotmail accounts support IMAP. However, accounts provided by hotmail may either end in 'hotmail.com' or 'live.com'.

In case of yahoo accounts it is essential to mention the domain name (yahoo.in or yahoo.com or yahoo.co.uk) apart form selecting yahoo from the drop down list on our registration page. For instance, please take a look at the image below.

IMAP/POP/SMTP & Email IDs supported on Jaamun

Some of you who have signed up for Jaamun service must have come across the terms IMAP/ POP & SMTP. I believe many of you would have heard about these terms. However, for the benefit of everyone I would discuss this in detail in this blog & also how it affects Jaamun service.

IMAP & POP are internet protocols that are used by email clients such as Outlook/Thunderbird to retrieve your email from email servers. What this means in very simple terms is that these protocols allow you to receive email automatically through a software without having to login and check for new email everytime manually. SMTP on the other hand is the protocol by which an email client can send an email.

Now, IMAP/POP is available on almost all email servers (Microsoft Exchange, Domino, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo etc.). However, on free email services such as those provided by Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, Rediff, Indiatimes etc. the access might be restricted. Gmail & Hotmail provide IMAP services on all email accounts absolutely free. Yahoo on the other hand provides POP access on certain accounts such as yahoo.in, yahoo.co.in, yahoo.co.uk etc. & on all paid email accounts. Other email providers such as Rediff, Indiatimes provide POP access on paid accounts only.

IMAP/POP access is critical to Jaamun service, since we use these protocols to securely pull your email from the email server and deliver it as an SMS. Further, Jaamun service can be integrated with any email server that supports IMAP/POP which includes enterprise servers such as Microsoft Exchange etc. Due to the fact that IMAP/POP access may not be available on some email accounts, some of our users would not be able to use Jaamun service.

From our end we are making all efforts to make Jaamun service available on all email accounts. Hopefully, we should return with some good news on this subject in the near future.

Let us know what you think could be the reason why some email providers restrict access to IMAP/POP services while other provide it for free.

Reply & forwarding emails on Jaamun

In this post we take a look at the reply & forward functionality of Jaamun service. These two features need a little bit of practice before one gets used to the format. We are trying to make Jaamun users more comfortable with this part of the service. Suggestions in this regard are most welcome :)

Replying & Forwarding Emails

Take a look at how a typical ‘email reply’ SMS would look. Here we simply reply to the sample mail that was received in the previous post.

There are two things that you need to type when you are replying to an email on Jaamun service. First is the keyword ‘r’ which indicates ‘reply’ and the second is the number of the email which is being replied to. As mentioned in the previous post, every email begins with a number which is used to refer to that particular email. The same number must be used when you send an ‘email reply’ via SMS. After ‘r’ followed by number, you must give a space before typing your reply and sending the SMS to 9773467755.

Now, take a look at how a typical ‘email forward’ SMS would look

Once again there are few things that you need to type when forwarding an email on Jaamun service. First is the keyword ‘f’ which indicates ‘forward’, followed by the number of the email. Second is ‘t:’ indicating ’to’ – the person(s) to whom mail is being forwarded followed by the email ID of the person( or persons separated by commas). Finally you need to give a space after the email ID(s), type the body of the message and send the SMS to 09773467755. You may choose not to type the body of the email, in which case the email would be forwarded as it is.

Note that 'r', ‘f’ &'t' are not case sensitive, which means that both 'r' & 'R' ; f’ & ‘F’ & 't:' & 'T:' would work. Also, you don’t need to put a space between ‘r' or 'f' and the number of the email, although by default our service understands both formats (with space and without space).

The outbound mails (reply, forward or compose which would be discussed in the next post) would be stored in your sent mail folder on your email account, in case you wish to go through them once again. In the case of Gmail, you would see your reply or forwarded email as a part of the conversation view.

As mentioned in an earlier post, the cost of sending an SMS to 09773467755 is over and above the subscription charges. The actual cost of sending an SMS may vary between Rs. 0 & Rs. 1.50, depending on your tariff plan.

Receving email on Jaamun Service

Once you have signed up for the Jaamun service online or via SMS, you can use your mobile to send and receive emails via SMS.

Receiving emails

Here is how a typical email on your mobile would look:

The mails would come to your phone from our service number 09773467755. You might want to store it in your contacts, since the same number would be used to reply, forward and compose emails on SMS.

The email that you receive on mobile through Jaamun Service is 480 characters long on most phones. On some older phones and specially CDMA phones you may receive email broken into 3 parts. However, most GSM networks & GSM phones support 480 character messages.

While designing Jaamun service we had two things in mind. The first was to make the service as intuitive as possible. For this reason we have used keywords that are easy to remember. For instance, as in the image above ‘F’ stands for ‘From’, ‘S’ stands for ‘Subject’ & ‘B’ stands for ‘Body of the email’.

The second objective was to overcome the limitation of characters on SMS characters while delivering information in the most readable format. As you may notice in the image, ‘@gmail.com’ becomes ‘@gmail’; ‘two’ becomes ‘2’; ‘there’ becomes ‘der’ and so on and so forth. At the same time we have also ensured that meaning of the mail does not get altered in the process of ‘SMS compression’ and hence we only replace words if the context is absolutely clear.

You can also see that the email begins with a number, 12 in this case. This number is important to our service. As you would find in out subsequent posts, the number refers to the email and is used when the user replies to or forwards the email. The numbers go from 0 to 99 before being re-set to 0.

Registering for Jaamun Email service - II

Apart from the online registration process explained in the previous post, you may also register for Jaamun service via SMS.

Registering for Jaamun Email service via SMS

To sign-up, simply send an SMS in the following format to 09773467755

Email ID SPACE Email Password

Next, you shall receive a confirmation of your registration via SMS.

An account will be automatically created for you on Jaamun. The user name for this account will be your mobile number and the password will be the same as your email password.

As and when you get time, you can login into your Jaamun account and configure filters, change email ID mapped to the mobile, configure time filters or pay for the subscription.

Jaamun service number 09773467755 is not an ordinary mobile number. It is actually a Virtual Mobile Number (VMN) just like the premium numbers that you might have come across such as 56070 & 56677, the only difference being that the users do not need to pay premium charges for sending an SMS to this number.

It is for this particular reason that we chose 09773467755 to operate our service, although we had the option of using a 5 digit premium number as well. All mails that you receive on mobile will come from 09773467755 and when you use our reply, forward and compose service you would have to send an SMS to the same number.

Also note that the cost of sending an SMS to 09773467755 is over and above the subscription charges. The actual cost of sending an SMS may vary between Rs. 0 & Rs. 1.50, depending on your tariff plan.

Registering for Jaamun Email service - I

For the benefit of Jaamun users, today we start with a series of blogs explaining how to make best use of Jaamun service.

As always, we would be glad to have your feedback.

Registering for Jaamun Email service online
The registration process is fairly typical, the kind you must have gone through a million times on various websites.

To begin, visit our registration page to create a new account. Do note that your mobile number becomes your user ID for www.jaamun.in and gives you access to various customization tools.

Once you press submit, you will receive a unique code via SMS on your mobile. Please enter this code and also provide the email account info.

Next, you can configure filters on Jaamun mobile email account. Using filters, you can block emails from particular email IDs or allow mails from specific IDs on your mobile. You may also configure filters based on the subject line keyword. In case you don’t want to set the filters now, you can come back later and configure it from your Jaamun account page.

Finally, you will receive a confirmation of your registration via SMS.

We understand how important is the safety of email ID & password and we have taken all steps to ensure that your personal information is completely secure. For technical information on the encryption scheme and information on server you may visit our security page.

Additionally, we have signed a non-disclosure agreement with our SMS vendor where we have ensured that your mobile numbers will not be shared with any 3rd party without your explicit permission.

Gmail requesting it's users to change password

We have recently heard from a few Jaamun users that Gmail is requesting them to change their account password after they sign up on Jaamun. Changing password, of course, causes Jaamun service to stop for that particular mobile.

Apparently not all people have faced this problem.

In any case, we have requested a clarification from Google on this issue. We shall update you guys as soon as we get more information.

Meanwhile, if your service has stopped because of this issue, you can resume service by updating password on Jaamun website. For this,

1. Log in to your Jaamun account by clicking here

2. Go to ‘General settings’

3. Update your email password

As has always been our endeavor, we have also made this 'Update' feature available on SMS. To resume service, you can also SMS
